Blue Bell Recalls Ice Cream and Other Frozen Dessert Products
April 22, 2015
Blue Bell Creamery has recalled its ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt and frozen snacks following the discovery of a strain of Listeria in two of its production facilities and in some ice cream in an Oklahoma hospital. Reportedly, more than a dozen people in Kansas, Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma have been infected with listeriosis, and three people have died, although it is as yet undetermined whether the deaths were caused by the patients’ Listeria infections.
The expanded recall list of Blue Bell ice cream and frozen dessert products has grown substantially since the original recall was announced. The best advice to consumers is to refrain from eating any of the Company’s products for now. Many grocery stores and other retailers have pulled all Blue Bell products from their shelves.
About Listeriosis
Listeriosis is a serious bacterial infection. The bacteria generally is found in water and soil. Dairy products may be contaminated with it when they contain milk from infected cows. Listeriosis symptoms may be short in duration and they include fever, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea, among others. In more serious cases, the infection may even result in death, including miscarriages and stillbirths of fetuses.
