St. Paul, Minnesota—Stryker Orthopaedics has agreed to pay at least $1.43 billion to settle lawsuits brought by patients who allege injuries from defective metal-on-metal hip devices. The global settlement resolves claims involving the Rejuvenate and ABG II modular hip implants manufactured by Stryker Orthopaedics.
The proposed settlement includes a base award of at least $300,000 for patients who required a revision surgery to remove the implant on or before November 3, 2014. That amount increases based on various individual factors.
These devices are among a number of metal-on-metal hip implants that pose a significant risk to patients. The profits from these devices prompted manufacturers, including Stryker Orthopaedics, to rush the implants to the market without adequate attention given to safety.
